Thanks for the informative post. Motherboard specifically makes reference to a PCB with the expansion capability. The name suggests, this board often referred as the "mother" of all the components attached to it. Often include interface cards, peripherals, and daughter cards: video cards, sound cards, hard drives, network cards, or other forms of persistent storage; TV tuner cards, cards providing extra USB or FireWire slots and the variety of other custom components.
